Benefits of employing a companion

What is a companion? It is someone who you spend time with to share an experience, pass the time, share your thoughts with or just be together. Synonyms for companionship are friendship, fellowship, amity, togetherness, closeness, camaraderie or rapport.

Socialisation has proven benefits to the ageing population. It reduces stress and anxiety, improves self-esteem and it reduces the risk of depression. Higher levels of socialisation also increases longevity. Finally, consistent positive social interaction helps keep seniors stimulated, mentally sharp and cognitively engaged.

It is very common to slowly isolate oneself as you get older. Some people are not able to participate in activities due to physical ailments or mobility problems. Other people have simply outlived their spouses or siblings and good friends and find themselves alone more often than not.

A companion might be able to compensate for or overcome some of the above mentioned obstacles in a unique way.

A companion is usually someone with a passion for people and a lot of love to give. They are patient, thoughtful and creatively find an activity that will be of interest to the individual. Depending on the client’s abilities, they also take them on outings, or accompany them to visits. So often I hear people saying “I don’t want to bother my children with this”, “they are already doing so much for me, I can’t ask anything more” or “if only I had a way to get there”.
