Equine Assisted Counselling
Equine Assisted Counseling is an experiential form of therapy which is facilitated through the use of horses. Treatment sessions are structured to focus on the client’s goals, and the environment is set up in preparation to facilitate the best outcome for them.
The horses and their interactions, both with the client and with each other, become a symbolic reflection of what is happening in a client’s life. If a client is looking for a different response from a horse, the horse won’t necessarily react to the normal methods the client utilises in their present life. The client must make a genuine transformation within themselves, changing their responses and non-verbal messages, to effect change in the horse’s response.
The Eagala Model is a psychological framework based on sound theoretical principles and is led by a licensed Mental Health Professional. The therapist is responsible for creating, with your support, a treatment plan and providing for the client’s emotional safety. The Equine Specialist co-facilitates with the therapist, and helps to oversee physical and emotional safety of the horses and everything in the environment.
